Here’s A Recipe I Like…

I’d say it’s pretty healthy, considering it’s coming from a guy who considers Thanksgiving his favorite meal.

Boil a pound of white chicken meat. Cool it and cut into chunks.
Chop two carrots, two peppers, (it’s more fun with a couple different colored ones) two stalks of celery and one onion.

Open a can of pineapple chunks. Drain half the juice.

Open a jar of sweet and sour sauce.

Dump everything into a crockpot, stir, set on low and leave alone for three or four hours. Three would obviously be crunchiest. ;)>

Serve over crispy noodles.

Now THAT’S good!!

Joining in on the Challenge

Up until about 5 years ago I was a walking fanatic. I walked 4 to 5 miles every day. I divorced and the house I bought was on a busy highway and I no longer had a convenient place to walk so I quit exercising. I have gained about 30 pounds in the last couple of years mainly because I quit exercising.

I quit my job at the end of November so I have more free time. My husband and I recently moved so I have a wonderful place to walk. My driveway is half a mile long! I have just been inactive for so long that it has been easy to find excuses not to get started.  This challenge was just the kick in the rear I needed. Thanks, Sandra.
My goal is to get back into shape and loose the extra weight by starting a walking program beginning today.

Cutting Out The Bad Things (sorta)…

For the most part, I can account 3 MAJOR contributors to my weight-gain over the past two years. In order of “badness”…

  1. No consistent exercise
  2. Bread
  3. Beer

So… I’m going to be piling on the exercise, and eradicating bread from my diet (at least during the week). What about the beer?

Well, I only drink beer on the weekend anyway. I don’t plan to remove beer from my diet-plan, but to compensate, I’ll up the number of times I go to gym per week. Sound fair? ;-)

Water? Well, I’m kinda a water-oholic anyway. I think I consume between 2 and 4 liters a day.

Details Of My Challenge

Last Week: 81.4 KGs (179.08 lbs)
12 Week Goal: 72 KGs (158.4 lbs)
Hight: 1.75m

In “theory” that shouldn’t be all that hard, right? I mean, that’s only about 1.7 lbs/week LOL! We’ll see… I’ll do my weigh-in every Friday morning, same time, same scale (a Physician Beam Scale).

The Plan?

Simple! Do exercise, decrease the portions I eat (of course, keep it healthy), and eat these portions 5-6 times a day so as to maintain a fast and consistent metabolic rate.

It’s winter here in the UK, which makes going to gym a pain (it’s cold and miserable). Oh well, no pain no gain!

I went back to gym yesterday afternoon (for about an hour), then played a 45 minute game of squash that evening. Bloody hell, I haven’t played squash for like 8 years… and I was puffing and panting after 10 minutes ;o)

Not to worry, I still managed to beat Anita 5 games to love ;-)

Kicking off the Body Challenge

Well… here we are. State my goals, right?

To be frank, I dont like the way I look. I am not in shape either, so I can add that I also dont like the way I feel. I have put on about 40lbs in the last couple of years, and I am absolutely fed up with the extra weight!

I put the weight on while I was taking care of my 93yo Grandmother full time, so I have no regrets about it… but now that I am on my own again, and have the time and energy, it is high time for me to focus on my health and work on my appearance.

My goal for the next 12 weeks is to lose 30 lbs. That’s an easy 10lbs a month - and I feel confident that I can do it. In fact, in November I lost 8 lbs rather quickly just making a few small changes in my daily routine… but I ‘fell off the wagon’ over the holidays.

My habits at this point are so horrendous that even small changes are bound to make a huge impact. What I did in November was simple: I quit smoking, quit drinking Pepsi, started drinking water, and worked out 20-30 minutes a day.

My plan for the next 12 weeks is to do that again - and this time to stick with it. I would also like to start eating better… and actually learn to cook more healthy foods. Growing up in the south, everything is deep fried and smothered in gravy. I hate to admit this, but I hardly even know my way around the produce section at the grocery store (laugh). This should be fun!

Thanks goes out to Sandra for putting this challenge into motion - and to all of the other participants. It’s much easier to take action on these goals when you have a group of friends to work alongside! ;)

p.s. Please, please, please post your favorite healthy recipes, or give me links to your favorite recipe sites for easy healthy stuff!

And now a confession…

It’s lucky for me that I was bold enough to propose this group blog. Otherwise I might have backed out on this weight loss challenge. I think I need the encouragement as much as anyone else so I’m glad that others were up to it too.
My weight loss goal is to lose 23 pounds which will bring me back to my teenage weight of 125. (Ah, the glory years. ha!) Besides that I want to be more consistent about eating healthy, getting all my veggies and cutting down on junk food.

I know how to eat healthy, diet, etc. but have just not had the willpower to stay consistent. My husband and I like to eat out a lot so that is one stumbling block. I think what would help me is to plan out my meals for the week better rather than just leaving it to the last minute — when I’m starving and will eat anything! I’ve been very consistent about exercising 5x a week for the past few months, but had to sit out for awhile because of trick knee. I think I’ve got that under control now. I also will increase the intensity of the workouts so I’m burning more calories.

Taking The Plunge…Slowly

OK.

As agreed, I actually weighed myself on Sunday.

The scale read 243 pounds.

Gotta get a new scale.

For me (I’m 6′), that means an extra 30 pounds to go.

I’m attempting to complete Phase 1 of the South Beach diet again with two short walks and some light weight training daily.

Such sensibility is new for me. I usually go all out, but this time I’ll ease into it to start.

When you have two energetic boys who often get sudden urges to wrestle with Dad, exhaustion can be dangerous!

This week is the kickoff of the 12 week body challenge! Our first objective is to work out our plans for the next 12 weeks. What are your goals? Is it to lose weight, if so how much? Do you have other health challenges you’d like to work on such as fitness, endurance, etc.?

Next is how will you accomplish these goals? What specific diet and exercise program will you use?

(Each challenger create a new post)
